
J.S. Archer Company was founded in 1913 when Mr. John Standard Archer
established a manufacturers’ agency to represent various manufacturers
of building materials. The Richmond-based company continued the agency
type of business until 1947 when the company was sold to Mr. R. Hughes
Smith. Soon after, the company shifted its business focus from a manufactures’
agency to a distributorship, purchasing its own products for resale
to customers. It was also during this period that the company began
to focus on commercial and industrial doors and operable partitions,
adding wood doors and contract hardware in the late 1960s.
During
the 1970s and 1980s, J.S. Archer Company continued to emphasize
the "total opening" concept in products and services.
By packaging the company’s products – hollow metal doors
and frames and wood doors with finish hardware, and overhead and
rolling doors with operators and dock equipment – the company
eliminated the necessity to coordinate two or three trades to complete
an opening. Further improvements included enhancing the company’s
inventory position; establishing a UL licensed wood and hollow metal
shop; and expanding the company’s installation, repair and
preventative maintenance services.
Following
Mr. Smith’s retirement in the late 1980s, J.S. Archer Company
was purchased by John E. Martin, C. Ralph Martin and Charles E.
Snead (retired), all active members of the company’s management
team. Since 1988, J.S. Archer Company, Inc. has continued to grow
and make changes as necessary to keep up with supply and demand
and the ever changing economy and world around us. We are currently
a commercial driven company that can furnish and install any and
all products sold. The market is constantly changing and J.S. Archer
will change to meet these demands.
